About Australian Teamster DonkeysAbout Australian Teamster Donkeys

Australian ‘Teamster’ Donkeysrnevolved from Donkeys were mainly introduced into Australia in the nineteenthrncentury, especially for use in the hot, dry, harsh interior of the continent.rnDonkeys in Australia had a mixture of blood from British as well as Nubian andrnArabian strains, all of which were imported into the country in the earlyrnperiod of European settlement.

rnrnWith the increasing use ofrnmechanized transport, donkeys largely outlived their usefulness, and many werernreleased, forming feral herds in outback areas.

rnrnWhen there was an upsurge inrninterest in donkeys in New Zealand around in the 1980’s, a number of thesernAustralian feral animals were imported into this New Zealand, where they arerngenerally just called ‘Australian’ donkeys. This event marked the beginning ofrna donkey revival in New Zealand.
