Even then, they were divided into two distinct breeds – a larger, more robust variety that would evolve into the modern Vorderwald cattle, and a smaller counterpart, known today as the Hinterwald cattle.

In the year 1896, a milestone was reached with the establishment of a dedicated herd book, a testament to the enduring legacy of these magnificent creatures. Yet, as the tides of time ebbed and flowed, changes came to pass, and in the wake of the 1960s, crossbreeding with Ayrshire cattle left an indelible mark on the breed.

Today, the numbers of Vorderwald cattle may be dwindling, their once-thriving herds now a mere shadow of their former glory. In the year 2004, a mere 4826 cows graced the pages of the herd book, a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by this noble breed.

Yet, despite the passage of time and the trials they have endured, the spirit of the Vorderwald cattle remains unbroken.
