The Rouge de l'Ouest sheep, a medium-sized breed, derives its name from its distinctive head coloring, which ranges from pink to deep red. Remarkably, these sheep are hornless, and their heads are adorned with fine hair, contributing to their unique appearance. Similarly, their legs mirror the coloration of the head and are coated in fine hair, adding to their distinctive characteristics.
Renowned for their fleece, Rouge de l'Ouest sheep boast a fine wool with a short staple length, which grows into a dense 'jacket.' This dense fleece provides ample protection against the harshest weather conditions, ensuring the sheep's comfort and resilience in various environments.
In terms of size, mature ewes of the Rouge de l'Ouest breed typically weigh between 75 to 100 kilograms, while rams exhibit a slightly larger build, weighing between 100 to 140 kilograms on average. This robust physique, coupled with their unique coloring and dense fleece, makes the Rouge de l'Ouest sheep a noteworthy breed valued for its distinctive characteristics and adaptability to diverse climates.
