The Damascus donkey, also known as the Syrian donkey or the Damascene donkey, is a breed of donkey indigenous to the Middle East, particularly the region surrounding Damascus, Syria. This breed is known for its hardiness and ability to withstand harsh climates and rough terrain. They are typically medium to large in size, with a height ranging from 14 to 15 hands (56 to 60 inches) at the shoulder. Damascus donkeys are well-built with strong legs and a muscular build, making them well-suited for carrying heavy loads over long distances. They come in a variety of colors, including black, grey, brown, and white. The Damascus donkey has a gentle and intelligent personality, and is highly valued as a pack animal, riding donkey, and for use in agriculture. Despite their importance to local communities, the Damascus donkey population has declined in recent years due to a combination of habitat loss, competition from other livestock species, and crossbreeding with other donkey breeds. Conservation efforts are underway to protect and preserve this unique and valuable breed.
